Set to Play the Hi-Dive Tonight: ‘Featured Artist,’ Megafaun, “The Longest Day”

March 27th, 2012  |  by Nels Thoreson   |  Published in Songs of the Day

Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases Wisconsin’s own, Megafaun, with  their song, “The Longest Day,” off their album, Gather, Form & Fly, through Hometapes.  They have since released, Heretofore, in 2010, and Megafaun, in 2011.  Songs off those albums will be featured in future articles of The Troubadour’s Road.  The group consists of brothers, Brad and Phil Cook, and Joe Westerland.

This is one of my favorite songs, and always finds its way into a playlist.  I dig their sound, their lyrics, you can’t beat their epic beards, and to top it off, they’re throwing back cans of Old Style.  I will admit, however, that I am bias, as I am from Wisconsin, as well, but bands from Wisconsin are tearing it up right now, and Megafaun is one of them.  They were in Spain and Portugal in February and now are on a US Tour throughout March and April, taking them from the East Coast to the West Coast.

The trio is currently West-bound from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and will be playing in Denver tonight, at the Hi-Dive.  Doors open at 8 PM, and tickets are only $12.  You can get tickets here.  Openers include the talented local band, Eye and the Arrow, followed by another phenomenal Wisconsin band, Field Report.  It is the must-see show in Denver tonight.  I hope to see you there.

These words find their place in the song, “The Longest Day,”

“wide awake
waiting for a sign
wanting you to take my hand

breathless in the morn
you’d gone to better lands
i just sat there, silent,
as the longest day began

gone a day
it feels like many years
there below the wet tree ground

sun gave to moon said
“sleep now restless one,
cause i ain’t never seen a night
that didn’t have a dawn”

spring brought rain
summer brought the fall
fox said goodbye to their homes

almost been a year
my love for you has grown
and this weathered photograph
is all i have to show.”

For updates, tour dates, and other news click on their website, you can buy their music on  iTunes, and can follow them on their Facebook Page.  Until the next show, or until the next time you’ll be able to listen to them, here is Megafaun, with their song, “The Longest Day,” through their HearYa Live Session, enjoy,
