Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases Bay, Missouri, and now Denver, Colorado, based, Nathaniel Rateliff, with his song, “Shroud,” off his album, In Memory Of Loss, through Rounder Records.  The record was produced by Brian Deck (Califone, Iron & Wine, Modest Mouse), who took Rateliff’s 8-track bedroom demos and transformed them into an incredible 13 track debut album.  Rateliff said, “The one thing that made me want to write and play music was trying to get the same feeling that it gave me when I listened to it.  Like having an anxiety attack—where you almost start to weep, at the same time feel a strange pressure in your chest.”  He then went on to say, “In Memory of Loss is for everyone who’s willing to listen.”

Rateliff has a busy couple months ahead, playing some local shows here in Colorado, and a couple dates in Arkansas, before heading to the UK to play the Gentleman of the  Road Festival organized by his friends, Mumford and Sons.  He then heads back to the US to play the Summerfest Music Festival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and then plays at the Electric Forrest Festival, in Rothbury, Michigan.  Be sure to check out his tour dates for additional information and ticketing regarding those shows.

Rateliff is a true troubadour, who is taking his music near and far, throughout the world.  Denver is fortunate to have a musician like him in our own backyard, and he’ll be one to continue to follow as he blazes his own path on his musical journey.

These words find there place in his song, “Shroud,”

“I’m looking more like my mother
I was so stagger’n waiting for you
I was so sure in my barely bended knees
That nobody cared for more

It does no good to talk about anything
It does no good to tell you I’m a wounded fiend

It’s up to things we discover
It’s in the way we try to cover with ground
I’m not a flat-fingered dullard
I was so sure and never right

I was the tongue
That’s telling you that some
Body else is trying

And I’ve got no feelings about it at all
In this old season of doubt and love
And I’ve got no reasons to bury it here…”
