Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases a band that hails from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, called Lost In The Trees, with their song, “Song for the Painter,” from their album, All Alone in an Empty House, through ANTI-Records. The band is led and was founded by Ari Picker (writer/vocals), and is supported by the talented, Emma Nadeau (french horn/vocals), Drew Anagnost (cello), Leah Gibson (cello), Jenavieve Varga (violin), Yan Westerlund (drums), and Mark Daumen (tuba).
The video was recorded live at one of the country’s best radio stations, in the KEXP studio, in April. Right away you’re able to hear their unique sound, with Picker likens to “orchestral folk music.” With regard to music, Picker says, “Music has played several roles in my life. The songwriting side has humanistic elements. It’s a defense mechanism against extreme relationships such as my parents had. Singing is a way of giving something up and letting go. The classical component of my music has more spiritual connotations. I feel like I‘m soaking something up, like I‘m being spoken to by something very elemental.”
These words find their place in their song, “Song for the Painter,”
“and to all of my friends
sorry i left you behind
and if i ever come back home
would you pour me a glass of wine
so i’d do anything to cry
‘id do anything to cry
let this pain fall from my eyes
and let time heal my insides
this song is for the painter
who lost both of her hands
and if i ever find my heart darling
i promise to come home again…”
