Today’s “Featured Artist and Songs of the Day” showcases Portland, Oregon’s own, Josh Garrels with his songs, “Fire By Night,” and “Farther Along.”  “Fire By Night” is off the album, Over Oceans, and was released in May of 2006.  “Farther Along” is off his latest album, Love & War & The Sea In Between, which was released in June of 2011.  The entire album can be downloaded here for FREE.   He played at a conference here in Colorado last November, in Boulder, and a friend of mine in attendance said it was an incredible performance.

His combination of vocals, guitar-playing, and lyrics form the foundation of great music.  He will be one to continue to follow as he makes his way down the troubadour’s road.

These lyrics find their place in his songs,

“Fire By Night”

“We are one, every daughter and son
With our forgotten names
We left home on the open road
To find the holy flame
We are the children of a sun king
Hold onto my hand this mysterious evening
It’ll meet us like a dream

Call all our names and we’ll be found
Walking were we heard the sound, on down
Tomorrow mountain we will climb
Tonight the stars and fire shine
In our eyes
In the wood
We’re alive

Cloud by day, and the fire of night
We will never look back
Young and old with a sojourner soul
Illuminate the path
Follow were the moon does shine
Through the leaves of trees above
Wild life, holy night
The ocean is singing of
The earth trembles with his love.”

“Farther Along” begins with:

Farther along we’ll know all about it
Farther along we’ll understand why
Cheer up my brothers, live in the sunshine
We’ll understand this, all by and by

Tempted and tried, I wondered why
The good man died, the bad man thrives
And Jesus cries because he loves em’ both
We’re all cast-aways in need of ropes
Hangin’ on by the last threads of our hope
In a house of mirrors full of smoke
Confusing illusions I’ve seen

Where did I go wrong, I sang along
To every chorus of the song
That the devil wrote like a piper at the gates
Leading mice and men down to their fates
But some will courageously escape
The seductive voice with a heart of faith
While walkin’ that line back home.”

For updates, tour dates, and other news click on his website, you can get his music here, and follow him on his Facebook Page.  Garrels has tour dates in Oregon the 27th and in Washington the 28th.  Colorado awaits his next stop.    Until then, or until the next time you’ll be able to listen to him, here is Josh Garrels, with his songs, “Fire By Night,” and “Farther Along,” enjoy,
