Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases Philadelphia, Pennsylvania’s own, Hoots & Hellmouth, with  their song, “Why Would You Want Not Want To Go There?” off their album, Salt, through sonaBLAST! Records.  This is the second album they’ve released within the year (they released a self-titled album in April 2011), which is quite the feat considering their time spent on the road.  The latest record, Salt, was recorded at Miner Street Studios, in Philadelphia, with the help of friend and engineer, Jon Low, who has also worked with Dr. Dog, Sharon Van Etten, and Twin Sister.  The talented group consists of Sean Hoots (guitar, vocals), Rob Berliner (mandolin, banjo, piano, organ, vocals), Todd “Bud” Erk (upright and electric bass, vocals), and Mike Reilly (drums, vocals).  The music video for “Why Would You Not Want To Go There?” was directed and edited by Stavros Stavropoulos, shot by Russ Geltman, and stars little dude, Perrin.  This is one of the best videos I’ve seen thus far in 2012, and is a great visual depiction of the storied lyrics of Hoots.

When talking about the music video, Hoots said, “For our first foray into the world of that archaic of art forms, the music video, we’ve enlisted both friends and family.  ’Tis a proper method, we feel, when tackling a song filled with such homespun imagery and comfy vibes.  We hope the viewer is drawn into our fanciful little kingdom.  All are welcome!”

The road is their home, and music fans will find them in venues small and large throughout the country, at festivals, rock clubs, dive bars and even farms.  Be sure to check out their tour dates for a show near you, as they are a band to continue to follow as they wander down the troubadour’s road.

These words find their place in the song, “Why Would You Not Want To Go There?”

“I’ve built such a fanciful kingdom in my head
Say don’t you want to go there?
Why would you not want to go there?

I’ve got greens in the garden and a freezer full of meat
A one trick pony with four left feet
A chapel in the apple orchard keeping at bay
Whatever’s hollering in the holler just a stone’s throw away from where…

I’ve built such a fanciful kingdom in my head
Say don’t you want to go there?
Why would you not want to go there?

With skins in the rafters of a patched up roof
A still in a clearing for the discerning of truth
Nine miles from nowhere, somewhere is home
Firmament, foundation and a place to rot my bones
When I’ve grown
Too old to live in my skin
Too big to keep it all in
Too holy for this world of sin
That I’ve been building

The dog’s in the parlor putting on a show
For the five little children sitting in a row
They talk a lot about things they should not yet know
It’s a slow, slow going…

I’ve built such a fanciful kingdom in my head
Say don’t you want to go there?
Why would you not want to go there?…”
