Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases, Gotye, featuring vocalist Kimbra, with their song, “Somebody I Used To Know,” off the album, Making Mirrors, through Universal Records here in the United States.  The album was released recently on December 6, 2011.  Gotye is the band name of electronic pop guru, Wally de Backer, who was born in Belgium, but was raised in Melbourne, Australia.  He began making music in his room as a teen, then fronted the band, Downstares, and then formed Gotye.

When talking about the sound of the record Gotye said, “I ended up sampling a lot of them (physical and acoustic instruments) note-by-note and turning them into virtual instruments,” he explains. “It’s a slow and sometimes laborious process, but it can completely change the sound of the instrument and how you approach playing it.  You can buy so many virtual instruments online these days, but it’s not nearly as personal as making them yourself.  I found a beautiful old chromaharp at an antique shop, and ‘virtualised’ it in this way.  It ended up sounding more like an unusual hammer dulcimer when played on a midi keyboard or programmed with software.”

What he achieved with sound, throughout the entire album, is incredible.  The song, “Somebody That I Used To Know,” has got the attention of the entire world, even fellow musicians, as many have covered the song, from Ingrid Michaelson to Walk Off The Earth.  The video, below, also is an amazing visual depiction of the song.

These words begin the song, “Somebody I Used To Know,”

“Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it’s an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I’ll admit that I was glad that it was over

But you didn’t have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don’t even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No you didn’t have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don’t need that though
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know

Now you’re just somebody that I used to know
Now you’re just somebody that I used to know…”
