Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases the talented band, Death Cab For Cutie, with their song, “Your New Twin Sized Bed,” off their album, Narrow Stairs, through Atlantic Records. The band has since released The Open Door EP, and a full-length album, Codes and Keys. Songs from those will be featured in future articles.
The band got its start in Bellingham, Washington, and began as a small, side-project of musical genius and front-man, Ben Gibbard, as he tried to balance music with his pursuit of an engineering degree. The little side-project garnered steam as he got some of his friends to help him play lives shows, and the result was the beginning of Death Cab For Cutie. Current band members include Gibbard (vocals, guitar), Chris Walla (guitar, multi-instrumentalist, producer) Nick Harmer (bass) and and Jason McGerr (drums).
Reflecting on that period of time Gibbard said, “I didn’t necessarily know it at the time, but [I was writing Narrow Stairs in] a very dark period of my life. I had lost control over a lot of things that I should have had control over, and I needed to make a lot of changes in my life. The record is a very dark album in a lot of ways. And after we finished making that record and I was listening back to it, I had this realization that I don’t want to write this record ever again. I don’t want this to be the thing that I write all the time.”
It is always amazing to see what kinds of things are produced during those periods of time, for a dark time for Gibbard produced some incredible music. Hopefully the darkness has found light, as he continues down his musical road.
These words find their place in their song, “Your New Twin Sized Bed,”
“You look so defeated lying there in your new twin size bed.
With a single pillow underneath your single head.
I guess you decided that that old queen holds more space than you would need.
Now it’s in the alley behind your apartment with a sign that says it’s free.
And I hope you have more luck with this than me.
You used to think that someone would come along.
And lay beside you in a space that they belong.
But the other side of the mattress and box springs stayed like new.
What’s the point of holding onto what never gets used?…”
