Today’s “Featured Artist and Song of the Day” showcases Eau Claire, Wisconsin’s own, Bon Iver, which is headed up by Justin Vernon, with his song, “Skinny Love,” off his debut album, For Emma, Forever Ago, which was released independently in July of 2007, and then released early in 2008 through Jagjaguwar Records.  His follow-up album, Bon Iver, was released in June of 2011, and has garnered much-deserved critical acclaim.  Last night, the album won a Grammy Award for Best Alternative Album.   The songs, “Holocene,” and “Calgary,” off that record, have been featured by The Troubadour’s Road.

Bon Iver also took home the Grammy Award for Best New Artist last night, which I applaud him for, but also find it comical.  I just think the award was five years delayed, but take nothing away from him being recognized now.  I’m just fortunate that I began listening to his work five years ago, as “Skinny Love” played on repeat.  He brought a new sound into the mix.  It’s not the usual cookie cutter cut-out, and I’m glad he stayed true to himself, and to his music.  I believe this was a great step for the music industry, and hopefully will be a trend for them, showcasing and featuring artists similar to that of Bon Iver.

Vernon also did an exceptional job with his acceptance speeches, as they were done with class and appreciation, both recognizing fellow nominees and those that weren’t nominated, and those that will never be nominated.  He did an incredible job of not only representing himself, but his band, his family, the state of Wisconsin, and most importantly, the music.

Many have now asked:  Who is Bon Iver?  Bon Iver is a sound.  The sound began in a small cabin in the northwoods of Wisconsin, created by Vernon and instilled in him.  The sound remains true, for it is his own, and is expressed by brilliant musicians in a collective sound.  The sound is Bon Iver.

These words begin Vernon’s song, “Skinny Love,”

“Come on skinny love just last the year
Pour a little salt we were never here
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Staring at the sink of blood and crushed veneer

I tell my love to wreck it all
Cut out all the ropes and let me fall
My, my, my, my, my, my, my, my
Right in the moment this order’s tall

I told you to be patient
I told you to be fine
I told you to be balanced
I told you to be kind
In the morning I’ll be with you
But it will be a different “kind”
I’ll be holding all the tickets
And you’ll be owning all the fines…”
